Information technology research initiatives supporting our research mission

In 2019, with the support and backing of the School of Medicine leadership, an initiative to better support the information technology needs of researchers was launched. The goals of this new initiative were to make information technology easy, accessible and cost effect for researchers in the school. Here are just a few of the information technology and service initiatives we are working on to better support our research mission in the School of Medicine.

Training

We provide onboarding for new faculty to help them better understand the information technology services and resources available at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical campus. This training reviews information technology best practices, data security and relevant policies. It is designed from an information technology perspective to help the faculty member get started off in the right direction and how the School of Medicine Information Services team can help.

Research Services

Recognizing that all data are not the same and developing data tiers to optimize the how information is stored on premises and in the cloud
Considering data as a resource and an asset to the university and providing enterprise security, protection and backup of this asset
Driving down the cost of data storage by leveraging the economies of scale and maximizing funding to be spent on the research mission

Partnering with identities on and off campus to provide secure and cost-effective platforms for compute analyses of large research data sets
Developing a high-performance compute strategy to include a variety of services and recognizing the advantages of cloud compute services
Providing data visualization tools, software licensing and other innovative ways to interpret data

Providing secure and efficient methods for data transfer with collaborators around the world
Planning a dedicated high-speed network for researchers to optimize transfer of large data sets though out campus and to other institutions
Leveraging new and innovative systems to promote collaborations and exchange of research data

- All data resides in the data center; data does not leave the data center
- Only accessible on campus or via VPN
- No cloud or vendor solutions

- R, SAS, SPSS, STATA, MatLab, MS SQL, and other software as needed

- Compliant with CMS, HIPAA, and NIST 800-171
- Policies in place to allow for future growth

Petalibrary

Archiving research data from projects that have been completed but must be saved for regulatory purposes.
Archiving research data on storage devices attached to scientific equipment such as genomic sequencers and microscopy images devices.
Collaboration and sharing data with colleagues at other institutions
Transferring data to Boulder to utilize the Summit high performance computing cluster
