Department of Dermatology Medical Student Shadowing and Exploration Policy

The Department of Dermatology offers career exploration opportunities for CU School of Medicine students and affiliated non-CU medical students who are already a part of a research or training program within the department.

NOTE: For academic year 2024-2025, the Department of Dermatology does not offer clinical electives to non-affiliated medical students ("away electives").

CU medical students:

Current students can arrange additional clinical career exploration experiences by submitting information and approval from a preceptor to the Office of Student Life and from the medical student coordinator, Julie Clarke (julie.clarke@cuanschutz.edu).

Medical students are responsible for securing a career exploration experience with a sponsoring faculty member.

Once a sponsor has agreed to host a career exploration experience, CU medical students must fill out this link to ensure requirements are met:
https://medschool.cuanschutz.edu/education/current-students/support-for-students/career-exploration

Non-CU medical student research affiliates:

Please check with your sponsoring faculty member regarding career exploration opportunities. Opportunities are limited to the locations for which you are already badged and credentialed for observation in the clinical space.

Non-affiliated medical students and other pre-professional students:

The Department of Dermatology does not currently support physician clinical shadowing (career exploration) opportunities for non-affiliated medical students or other learner types (including non-affiliated medical students, undergraduates, high school students, and other health professionals).
