Residency

The Dermatology Residency Program at the University of Colorado School of Medicine is an ACGME approved three-year program (PGY-2 through PGY-4). The program is accredited to take up to six residents per year. The residency is an integrated program, utilizing the combined facilities of the Anschutz Medical Campus, Children's Hospital Colorado, Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center, and Denver Health Medical Center. Graduates of our program are prepared for a career in either academic medicine or clinical practice.

Strengths of Our Program

  • Training on the largest medical referral facility in the Rocky Mountain region.
  • Four accessible training sites which offer unique learning opportunities, and the combined experience at each of these sites ensures exceptional clinical training.
  • State-of-the art clinical and research facilities on a recently-built (2007) campus.
  • Sub-specialty clinics in contact dermatitis, cutaneous lymphoma, high risk skin cancer, hair loss, epidermolysis bullosa/wound healing, genetic skin disease, and vascular anomalies.
  • Facilities include a Cutaneous Oncology Center where Surgical Dermatology and the Division of Medical Oncology are integrated to optimize management of patients with melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
  • Large patient population provides opportunities to learn from both routine and complex skin disorders in children and adults.
  • Structured didactic training with conferences staffed by attending physicians.
  • Approved fellowships in Dermatopathology, Mohs Micrographic Surgery, and Pediatric Dermatology.

Anschutz Cancer Pavilion

  • Located at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado, just seven miles east of downtown Denver.

  • Largest academic health center west of Chicago and north of Texas.
  • Home base for the residency program where the majority of the clinical and didactic training takes place.
  • Site where the majority of the sub-specialty clinics are held and where many of the highly complex referral cases are seen.
  • Dedicated inpatient dermatology consultation service provides consistent opportunities to learn from the most severe and acute dermatologic conditions.
  • World class dermatopathologists work alongside trainees and are invaluable contributors to weekly didactic sessions.
  • Two full-time Mohs Micrographic Surgeons attend a busy procedural service within a unique Cutaneous Oncology suite, alongside colleagues in the Division of Medical Oncology.
  • Major site for clinical research with focuses in atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, CTCL, melanoma, and non-melanoma skin cancer.

  • Unique medical sub-specialty foci in genetic skin disorders and epidermolysis bullosa/wound healing.
  • Major referral center for patients with vascular anomalies and surgical conditions requiring procedural treatment strategies.
  • Training site for the Pediatric Dermatology fellowship.

Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center

  • State-of-the-art facility on the Anschutz Medical Campus recently opened in January 2018.
  • Distinctive patient population offers extremely valuable experiences in both the short- and long-term management of patients with skin cancer.
  • Multiple surgical clinics are held weekly and staffed by permanent and volunteer dermatologic surgeons.
  • Teledermatology at this site provides opportunities to utilize current technology in order to best serve geographically isolated patients in multiple neighboring states.
  • Focus on epidemiologic dermatology with multiple research opportunities.
  • Many advocacy and teaching opportunities with primary care providers, residents, and medical students.

Denver Health Medical Center

  • Located nine miles west of the Anschutz Medical Campus.
  • Twenty-five percent of all Denver residents receive their medical care at Denver Health.
  • Serves a diverse and underinsured patient population who tend to have more advanced, undiagnosed dermatologic disease.
  • Opportunities to learn how to optimize long term management of patients with limited resources.
  • Comprehensive approach to care with adult, pediatric, and surgical dermatology clinics held weekly. Relatively higher numbers of patients with autoimmune connective tissue diseases and immunobullous diseases.
