Many nursing homes provide both long-term care and short-term care.
Long-term care provides individuals with both nursing and custodial care (help with bathing, meals, toileting, and more). Long-term care is typically paid for through long-term care insurance, Medicaid or private pay.
Short-term care (also referred to as skilled rehabilitation or post-acute care) is focused on providing individuals with nursing care and rehabilitation (physical, speech and/or occupational therapy) to get them back into the community. Short-term care is typically paid for by Medicare or private insurance plans.
