Research Interests

My research interests include burn resuscitation and surgical management of burns, complex wounds, and other soft tissue injuries. Additionally, I am interested in best practices for management of necrotizing soft tissue infections. My focus is on developing clinical techniques that are simple and feasible both in resource-rich and austere environments.

Active Research Projects

Banana Leaf as a Primary Wound Dressing for Partial Thickness Burn Wounds

Banana leaves have been used as wound dressings by many indigenous groups from around the world. The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficacy of banana leaves as a primary wound dressing for partial thickness burns. Patients with partial-thickness burns <10% total body surface area will be enrolled on admission to the UCHealth Burn and Frostbite Center. The primary endpoint is burn wound infection, with secondary endpoints including time to wound closure, rate of skin grafting, other complications (AKI, graft loss, local hypersensitivity reaction, etc.) and pain scores during wound care.

  • Safety of Maintaining Nutrition Through Moderate Sedation for Burn Wound Care

    3/24/2025
Burn patients often require frequent moderate sedation for burn wound care procedures. The American Society of Anesthesiology recommends patients be made nil per os prior to moderate sedation. Here, we aimed to assess the risk of moderate sedation in burn patients with uninterrupted nutrition. A 12-month single-center retrospective analysis on non-intubated/non-tracheostomy burn patients receiving moderate sedation for wound care was performed. A total of 97 moderate sedations were completed on...

  • Bone and Skin/Subcutaneous Tissue Concentrations of Cefiderocol During Treatment of Extensively Drug-Resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa

    2/29/2024
Pyoderma gangrenosum is a rare dermatologic disorder that disrupts the skin barrier, requiring immunosuppressive therapy. We successfully used cefiderocol for the treatment of an extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteremia, and presumed osteomyelitis in a patient with severe pyoderma gangrenosum and associated immunosuppressive therapy while being medically optimized for skin grafting. We obtained bone and skin/subcutaneous tissue while the patient was on cefiderocol under an...

  • Augmented Renal Function in Burn Patients: Occurrence and Discordance With Commonly Used Methods to Assess Renal Function

    7/14/2023
Augmented renal clearance (ARC) is defined by supraphysiologic renal function and is associated with drug failure due to subtherapeutic drug exposure. Burn patients are cited as being at high risk for ARC, yet rates of ARC have not been well described. This retrospective study described the prevalence and incidence of ARC, and compared 12-hour urine collection values (CrCl-12) vs. common estimates of renal function in assessed patients at an American Burn Association-verified burn center.
