Research Interests

The Metabolic Surgery and Inflammation Research Lab focuses on understanding the intricate relationship between metabolic disorders, surgical interventions, and inflammation. In collaboration with Dr. Juan Pablo Idrovo and Dr. Bryan Bergman our research aims to uncover the underlying molecular mechanisms by which metabolic surgery influences systemic inflammation, with the ultimate goal of improving patient outcomes and developing novel therapeutic strategies.

Key areas of investigation include:

  • Inflammatory pathways and metabolic syndrome: Exploring how metabolic surgery modulates pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory pathways in conditions like obesity, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
  • Immune system dynamics: Investigating the impact of surgical interventions on immune cell function and inflammation resolution.
  • Adipose tissue inflammation: Understanding the role of adipose tissue in chronic inflammation and how surgical techniques can alter inflammatory markers to promote metabolic health.
  • Post-operative inflammatory response: Assessing short- and long-term inflammatory changes following various metabolic surgeries (e.g., bariatric surgery) and their correlation with metabolic improvements.

By combining clinical insights with cutting-edge molecular research, we strive to innovate in the fields of metabolic health and inflammation to enhance surgical outcomes and patient care.
