Dialysis Access Surgery

When a patient is facing advanced kidney disease (Chronic Kidney Disease, Stage 4 or 5), it can be a confusing and frightening time. When your nephrologist tells you the need for dialysis is imminent or for patients already on dialysis, there is a need for permanent dialysis access. Our Dialysis Access Team, led by Dr. Peter Kennealey, is here to help answer your questions and guide you through the process.

There are two types of dialysis: peritoneal dialysis and hemodialysis. Our team specializes in placing peritoneal dialysis catheters under laparoscopic guidance, and in creating all types of hemodialysis access. Dr. Kennealey has been performing these procedures since 2009 and completes approximately 400 procedures annually. We focus solely on the care of patients facing the need for dialysis access, which results in highly specialized care for this population.

We perform these procedures on an outpatient basis at University of Colorado Hospital, Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora, Colorado, and at UCHealth, Cherry Creek North Ambulatory Surgery Center in Denver, Colorado. We take pride in our focus on your entire operative experience, striving to ease the anxiety that is common when facing the reality of dialysis. Our team will coordinate every aspect of your care, and we work closely with referring nephrologists as well as interventional nephrologists and radiologists to provide a comprehensive experience for patients in need of dialysis access.
