Michel Chonchol, MD is the Mats Wahlstrom Professor of Medicine. He is an established board-certified nephrologist with extensive experience in performing epidemiological studies and randomized clinical trials in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Dr. Chonchol serves as Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Renal Diseases and Hypertension and Director of the Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease (ADPKD) Center at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Center. Since 2007, Dr. Chonchol has examined promising non-traditional risk factors for cardiovascular disease in patients with CKD. In addition, he has implemented numerous strategies for treating CKD-associated cardiovascular dysfunction and kidney disease progression. During this period, the majority of his work has focused on CKD-related abnormalities of mineral metabolism.
More recently Dr. Chonchol’s work has extended to implement strategies to delay kidney disease progression in ADPKD and testing novel anti-inflammatory therapies in CKD. Dr. Chonchol has created a Center for Kidney Disease Research to conduct patient-centered and epidemiologic studies in CKD and ADPKD, and to train pre- and post-doctoral students and fellows through early-career investigators in clinical research. Since establishing his clinical research in 2007, Dr. Chonchol has been continuously funded by NIH to conduct R01 supported clinical research investigations in the field of mineral metabolism and more recently in ADPKD. Dr. Chonchol, has also significant mentoring experience at the post-graduate level.
