Modern Human Anatomy Program

The Master of Science Program in Modern Human Anatomy (MHA) provides graduate level training and teaching experience in the physical and virtual anatomical sciences. The curriculum integrates 3D computer imaging and modeling with dissection of human anatomical donors, neuroanatomy, histology, and embryology.

Dr. Stabio and 2nd year student, Savannah DeBaets, presented their work at the International Conference on Plastination meeting in Odense, Denmark.

Dr. Maureen Stabio, the Executive Director of the Modern Human Anatomy (MHA) program, and 2nd year MHA student, Savannah DeBaets, traveled to 22nd Annual International Conference on Plastination held at the University of Southern Denmark in Odense.  Dr. Stabio and Savannah co-presented their work titled, "Putting Ethics into Practice: A Test Case for Operationalizing IFAA Guidelines for Plastination in Anatomy Museums."  Savannah attended the meeting to present, learn from international experts, and gather data for her capstone project with Dr. Stabio.

Savannah had a stellar time at the conference, saying, "This experience has been a truly amazing one that I never expected I'd have in grad school! I had the opportunity this week to connect with anatomists from all over the world. Learning about their work on plastination, body donation, and teaching anatomy in their programs has enriched my academic and personal life immensely. I am coming home with so many new and exciting ideas for the rest of my time in MHA, and beyond."

The MSMHA program was a great experience, with great faculty that serve as mentors and encourage you to explore things you are intellectually curious about. The program prepared me well for medical school and beyond. The flexibility of the second year curriculum allowed me to explore my interests and led me to the medical specialty of anatomic and clinical pathology. The strong foundation in the anatomic sciences that was built in this program is put into practice daily, from gross dissection of surgical specimens, to using microscopic anatomy when I look at glass slides to render a pathologic diagnosis for patient care. Not only do I use my anatomic training daily, I am using the training I received in various imaging modalities and technologies to understand current innovations in digital pathology and the utility of imaging combined with informatics to improve diagnostic accuracy. It's an exciting time to be an anatomist!
