Coaching Program Reduces Burnout Among Resident Physicians
A coaching program aimed at decreasing burnout among female resident physicians significantly reduced emotional exhaustion and imposter syndrome while increasing self-compassion over a six-month period. The study, published in JAMA Open Network, is led by Tyra Fainstad, MD, visiting associate professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine, and Adrienne Mann, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine.
Physicians’ Experiences With Mistreatment and Discrimination by Patients, Families, and Visitors and Association With Burnout
Lotte Dyrbye, MD, MHPE, senior associate dean of faculty and chief well-being officer, is co-author of an article by JAMA Network Open that quantifies mistreatment and discrimination that physicians experience from patients, patients’ families and visitors. In a survey of 6,500 physicians from across the United States, nearly 30% said they faced discrimination and mistreatment, and 20% said they had times when patients, families or visitors have refused care because of the physician’s race, ethnicity, or gender.
A Graphic Transformation: A Qualitative Study of Transformative Learning in Medical Trainees during COVID-19 Using Comics as Data Presentation
Benjamin Vipler, MD, assistant professor in the Division of Hospital Medicine, and colleagues conducted an interpretive qualitative study to identify themes pertaining to transformative learning. They used the medium of comics to depict select interviewees’ experiences during the pandemic as a novel way to represent themes from the interviews.
Sachin Wani, MD, Receives $2.2M NIH Grant Award
Sachin Wani, MD, associate professor of medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology received a five-year NIH grant for the project "A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial of Surveillance versus. Endoscopic Therapy for Barretts Esophagus with Low-grade Dysplasia: The SURVENT Trial".
Virginia Sarapura, MD, Collaborator on Translational Medicine Award
Virginia Sarapura, MD, professor of medicine in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes, is a collaborator on a Translational Medicine Award that was recently funded for Mia Smith, MD, who is an assistant professor of pediatrics at the Barbara Davis Diabetes Center.
Sue Gu, MD, Receives ATS Grant Award
Sue Gu, MD a 5th year fellow in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine, is the recipient of the American Thoracic Society Early Career Investigator Award in Pulmonary Vascular Disease, which is a one-year $100,000 grant.
Fan Zhang, PhD, Receives PhRMA Foundation Award
Fan Zhang, PhD, assistant professor of medicine in the Division of Rheumatology, is the recipient of the PhRMA Foundation Research Starter Grant for her project, "Deciphering Shared Inflammatory Myeloid Phenotypes Between Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and RA-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease by Computational Omics".
Erin Finn, MD, Receives Fellowship Grant
Erin Finn, MD. fellow in the Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Diabetes received a 2022 Endocrine Fellows Foundation Fellowship Grant for the project "Effects of Sleeve Gastrectomy on Enteral Glucose Metabolism in Youth with Obesity"
Shelley Forbes, MD, Receives International Society of Travel Medicine Grant
Shelley Forbes, MD's proposal for "An Iron Supplementation Sub-Study Added to our Existing Healthy RV in Hypoxia" project was funded by the International Society of Travel Medicine. Dr. Forbes is a third year fellow in the Division of Pulmonary Sciences and Critical Care Medicine.
