Dear Colleagues,
It’s the season of change, closure, as well as new beginnings.
The end of a journey came to a close for our MD graduates last month as we celebrated all they had accomplished during commencement. Conversely, a new chapter begins for our interns in Medicine as we welcome them to campus this month. I have no doubt that this incoming class’s energy and talent will make their mark on our department and beyond. While 54% are women, this class also carries the honor of being the largest representation of URim interns in our program’s history.
I’m also heartened by the good news, accomplishments and achievements that continue to flood my inbox daily. This positive momentum and trajectory is just what we need as we embrace new leadership coming on board—as announced last week, we welcome Sunita Sharma, MD, to the role of Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Mentorship. I am also delighted by the news that 53 of our faculty—including clinicians, research-intensive faculty and many from our affiliate sites – were all promoted up the academic ranks this year.
This month we will also host town halls for three exceptional candidates for the Vice Chair for Research. And, I expect we will soon identify ideal candidates to lead our Divisions of Geriatrics, GI and Rheumatology.
Even during these times of change and transition, I’m encouraged by what we can be certain of—that we will continue to grow and develop our exceptional trainees and faculty who will become the future of medicine, and that we will continue to live our mission, care for our patients and advance our research.
As Dean Riley said at commencement, “Despite the tremendous progress we have seen in medicine over the course of my career, we still have a long way to go.” The Department of Medicine is well poised for this journey with the incredible people who contribute to all of our missions every day.
Onwards,
Vineet
