Learning About the Importance of Genetic Counseling
Oct 28, 2021 |
Michelle Springer, MS, a certified genetic counselor with the division of medical oncology explains that genetic counseling consists of more than genetic testing. A well rounded assessment requires that genetic counselors look at each patient as in individual. In order to do so, they must consider personal history and family history of cancer to determine whether cancer within a family can be attributed to an inherited mutation. |
The knowledge gained from genetic counseling empowers individuals to understand their options and develop a plan of action. Understanding genetic predispositions gives power to those who feel powerless in their situation and allows people to be active participants in their health care decisions.
“When we talk with our patients, we emphasize that our conversation with them at that time is a snapshot of where we’re at right now. For some individuals, their opinions and decisions may change over time. So as we’re following them, we’re asking how they feel about where they’re at with screening, or if they are interested in meeting with a surgeon, emphasizing that there is no right or wrong answer and no one-size-fits-all" says Michelle.
