Dr. Messersmith Named CMO of Oncology Services
Jan 31, 2022Congratulations to Wells Messersmith, MD, FACP, on being named Chief Medical Officer of Oncology Services at UCHealth. In this new role, Dr. Messersmith will oversee cancer care at all UCHealth locations while focusing on expanding advanced treatments and clinical trials offered by UCHealth in partnership with the CU Cancer Center. Dr. Messersmith was also recently named Associate Director for Clinical Services at the CU Cancer Center and will continue to hold his position of Division Head for Medical Oncology.
Since joining the CU School of Medicine and UCHealth in 2007, Dr. Messersmith and his team have been instrumental in growth of the GI cancer program through the development of multi-disciplinary clinics, systemwide retreats, an specialty satellite clinics.
Dr. Messersmith aims to use a personalized approach in the development of new anticancer drugs for GI cancers. His research lab utilizes novel colorectal and pancreatic laboratory models whereby tumor tissue is obtained from the operating room and tested with novel anti-cancer agents. Dr. Messersmith has served as principle investigator of more than 80 clinical trials, including more than 20 first-in-human agents with an emphasis on cancer cell signaling and immunotherapy.
