LC-MS/MS is a highly accurate method of qualitative and quantitative analysis for the detection of analytes. Specifically, electrospray ionization and triple quadrupole mass spectrometers are used for the iC42 clinical toxicology assay.

LC-MS/MS was chosen for its ability to test hundreds of analytes in a small window of time, for its high sensitivity even while detecting a high number of analytes, and for its ability to provide structural confirmation simultaneously. 

The use of liquid chromatography as a confirmatory spectroscopic method has been extensively researched in forensic and clinical toxicology laboratories over recent years. Our lab is fully accredited and in compliance with CAP, CLIA, DEA, GLP and HIPAA. 

Ensuring the quality of analytes used as reference materials and in the internal standards, including that they are used before their expiration dates is critical for calibrators, quality control samples, and for the accurate quantification of analytes in patient samples. 

Laboratory technicians can detect over a hundred drug analytes or metabolites that indicate drug use with a single assay and quantify results with extensively validated data analysis methods.

The iC42 laboratory is currently developing methods for the testing of dried blood spots for the detection of the full panel of drugs detected in urine samples.

The development of this method will allow for the comparison of drug analyte levels in both urine and blood for a more comprehensive and detailed report for clinicians as well as for therapeutic drug monitoring with highly inter-individual pharmacokinetics such as methadone.

Currently, iC42’s most exciting pediatric pharmacokinetics project is the development of small volume sampling techniques that measure accurate drug levels from a single drop of blood. These novel and highly sensitive assays detect the drug, their metabolites and also the biomarkers.

This current research has the potential to revolutionize pediatric drug studies and patient monitoring by enabling us to extract reliable data from miniscule samples obtained from our smallest subjects.
