There were less than a dozen black and a couple hundred brown students out of 1800 kids in my high school. I had two black roommates during my junior year of college and that was supremely informative, but I was still in my bubble back then and had no idea of their life experiences.
I’m now in HR. Well-versed in the law and affirmative action and all of the protected classes. But, I still have so much to learn!
Our country is in crisis. The death of George Floyd at the hands of white police officers has exposed a gaping wound that began hundreds of years ago in our country and has never healed. We must all do more to divest ourselves of our privilege (perceived or real) and work much harder to really understand, accept, and work beyond the systemic racism that has finally boiled over demanding our attention.
When things are brought into the light, we can deal with them.
We have the power, so we have to fix this.
