Teaching physicians can claim AMA PRA Category 1 CME Credit™ for teaching students/residents by using our existing process. It requires an application from the teacher that should be completed within 30 days of the teaching activity. It provides up to 2 credits per 1 hour of teaching time, up to a maximum of 30 credits per academic year. This credit can be earned for learning that occurs by the teacher in preparation for the teaching activity. It applies to preparation to give a talk to learners or teach a workshop or some other formal teaching process, but precepting or informal teaching sessions with learners do not qualify for this type of credit, per AMA and ACCME rules. We follow the required process by the AMA and the ACCME to provide category 1 credit. The application form requires a description of the learning that occurred, the teaching activity, and self-reflection about the outcome. This process is free.
Teaching physicians may be able to claim CME credit for teaching (defined as “supervising, assessing and monitoring the progress of undergraduate medical students and residents/fellows”) through their specialty society or specialty board, and possibly through the AMA. AMA PRA Category 2 Credit™is self-designated and claimed by individual physicians for participation in educational activities not certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. The AMA Physician’s Recognition Award and credit system outlines this process and may be found on page 10 of the AMA PRA Booklet.
