Continuing Education (CE) requirements in Colorado (2024 legislation)
Physicians: at least 30 hours of approved AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ CME every 2 years with license renewal (starts 2027 cycle)
Must also complete at least 2 hours of substance use disorder training for license renewal every 2 years (CME courses, self-study, peer review, volunteering, teaching) Exemptions: national board certification that requires equivalent substance use prevention training or attestation that the health-care provider does not prescribe opioids
Specialty-dependent: most certifying boards require much more CME than this state requirement
Physician Assistants: at least 100 hours of CE every 2 years with license renewal, including at least 50 hours of AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ CME
Must also complete at least 2 hours of substance use disorder training for license renewal every 2 years
Advanced Practice Nurses: no CE requirement in CO, but must complete 2 hours of substance use prevention training for each license renewal period (if have opioid-prescribing authority) and 10 hours of CE in pharmacology or pharmacotherapeutics every 2 years (if prescriptive authority); must also maintain national board certification
Other health care providers: CE requirements vary
DEA renewal requires one-time verification of at least 8 hours of approved training about the treatment and management of patients with opioid or other substance use disorders.
