Reaching the Community
Empowering the Public Through Educational Events and Professional Pursuits
Jan 12, 2024Community events are a cornerstone of the Ludeman Family Center for Women’s Health Research. We believe that by reaching our community, we can bring evidence-based health information to people throughout the country to empower them to advocate for their own health. In addition, we are inspiring a new generation of young people to reach their goals and pursue careers in health professions.
Let’s Talk: Conversations about Women’s Health
Our unique health lecture series brings health information directly to the community through a partnership with UCHealth. We host four lectures each year on a variety of health topics and hear from experts at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. We average an attendance of 100 community members at each lecture. Many of the participants use the health information offered in their own lives. “I've been pleased with the topics that have been provided and I especially enjoyed and learned from this last presentation on taboo topics - very practical.” - Let’s Talk Participant

Girls Career Day
On June 6, the Ludeman Center hosted 50 students for Girls Career Day, encouraging these young people to pursue a career in science. This annual event partners with several high schools in Aurora and Denver to give students a unique learning opportunity. One highlight of the day was participating in activities at the Center for Surgical Innovation where students learned how to suture and had an anatomy lesson using a cadaver. Students also saw several career paths at UCHealth including basic research at the Sue Anschutz Rodger’s Eye Center where they dissected pig eyes. They also toured the Emergency Department, went to the helicopter pad and heard from leaders at UCHealth about their professional journeys. These students are nearing high school graduation, and we hope this helped inspire them to join the healthcare field. One student said her favorite experience was the dissection lab at the Eye Center. She is hoping to find an internship or summer program to continue learning about research and patient care in ophthalmology.

New Partnership with Vuela for Health
We are thrilled to be fostering a partnership with Vuela for Health, a community health organization dedicated to engaging Colorado’s Latino community through efforts that build leadership, promote health and foster economic and social well-being. On October 28, we co-hosted a conference featuring Dr. Leslie Appiah who delivered a presentation on menopause and provided evidence-based guidance for women to navigate this transition. More than 120 people attended, with remarks delivered in English and Spanish, and a highly engaged audience.
Ludeman Center Researchers at Evré
On March 11, Ludeman Center researchers joined UCHealth’s annual women’s health event, Evré, to answer questions about the latest information in their areas of expertise. This event not only featured our researchers, but also had fitness classes, health screenings and more.
Ludeman Center researchers included:
Seth Creasy, PhD, timing of physical activity and weight management
Annie Caldwell, PhD, health psychology regarding energy balance, exercise and weight management
Megan Moriarty Kelsey, MD, MS, prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes in youth
Successful Center for African American Health Event
On May 6, Amy Huebschmann, MD, senior faculty and lead scientist for community outreach and education, led efforts to participate in the Center for African American Health’s Health Fair. The Ludeman Center provided blood pressure cuffs to participants, handed out health information, assisted in health screenings and answered questions from participants. This is an excellent opportunity to reach more members of our community.
