Kelly Fuller, PhD, received her BS in exercise science from the University of Connecticut, her MS in nutritional science from Iowa State University and her PhD in molecular, cellular and integrative physiology from the University of Kansas Medical Center.
In 2022, Dr. Fuller began her Ludeman Center-funded research project titled, “Sex Differences and the Role of Estrogen Receptor in the Hepatic Metabolic Response to Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy in Mice.” Her project utilizes a preclinical mouse model to advance our understanding of why males and females have different hepatic responses to bariatric surgery. The project will focus on lipid metabolism and also investigate the role of estrogen action.
“I value the Ludeman Center’s commitment to advancing women’s health research while supporting the next generation of scientists and researchers. The center has established an amazing network of researchers which provides training opportunities that simultaneously advance career growth alongside promotion of novel scientific discovery,” she shares.
Dr. Fuller’s current research of the pathophysiology of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease focuses on mitochondria and sex differences. Inspired to be part of the effort to narrow the gender gap in the knowledge of the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases, she hopes her work helps to identify and advance sex-specific approaches, thereby improving health outcomes in women.
