An outpatient eConsult is an electronic exchange between a PCP and a specialist. The exchange relates to an individual patient and takes the place of a new-patient visit with the specialist.

By participating in the eConsult process, patients can potentially avoid an in-person visit with a specialist. This saves the patient time and travel to an in-person visit, and it can save the patient a co-pay at the specialist’s office.

Specialists can convert an eConsult to an in-person visit if they determine it’s necessary based on the information provided by the PCP.
