Careers in Surgery

Students considering a career in surgery should meet with Paul N. Montero, MD, or Teresa Jones, MD, at their earliest opportunity. Students can contact them via the e-mail addresses listed below.

The Surgery Department strongly encourages all students interested in a career in surgery to take SURG 8000 or SURG 8001 to confirm their interest. IDPT 7050 (Operative/Perioperative Care) does not have to be taken at University of Colorado Hospital or Denver Health Medical Center. If students took IDPT 7050 at UCH or DHMC, they should take surgical electives in those areas in which they have an interest (i.e., Orthopaedic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Pediatric Surgery, or Cardiothoracic Surgery). These rotations are especially valuable for those students who are uncertain whether they want a surgical career. The courses also benefit the students who want to become better known by the surgical staff.
