Residents, Patients and Families

You can help improve how we care for nursing home residents.

We want to hear from you! We’re currently looking for volunteers to help us with existing research projects. You can also share your experience and insight. Your feedback helps us design new projects that can address your biggest concerns.

Nursing home research makes the care you receive better.

When you see your doctor, he or she follows a set of best practices called "evidence-based care." Medical research is important because it informs evidence-based care. Yet there hasn't been much research done nursing homes, meaning we lack evidence on how to best care for people like you and those who love you!

It's easy for residents and family members to volunteer.

There are many ways to get involved:

  1. Volunteer to participate in a research study.
  2. Volunteer to give us feedback on research study proposals.
  3. Share your thoughts and insight as a community member on our Stakeholder Advisory Board.

Tell us a little about yourself, your interests and how you would like to help.

Most of our current research takes place in Colorado. If you live outside of Colorado, you can still sign up to be contacted about research opportunities.

Do you have questions about nursing home care?

We have experts who can provide answers to your questions about navigating nursing home care. Email us to learn more.

You can support our mission to improve nursing home research via donation.

Caring for our loved ones as they age is a concern we all share. Your tax-deductible donation will go directly to research that will help us improve care in nursing homes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our researchers study a wide range of areas that people may encounter as they age. Some of our research is qualitative in nature, meaning our researchers simply want to talk learn more about your experiences through interviews, medical record review or group discussions. Some research is quantitative, meaning studies are designed to gather data from many participants to look at how an intervention, such as how often a heart failure patient is weighed, impacts outcomes. Some research may be part of a clinical trial, such as testing a medication versus a placebo or the impact of a new monitoring device. Learn more about our studies.

People who participate in research hope to make things better for nursing home residents - now and in the future.

There's a misconception that people participating in research are "guinea pigs." This is simply not true. Our researchers conduct research with the highest ethical standard. The aim of their research is consistently how to improve care for older adults. All of our studies are overseen by institutional review boards - committees that exist solely to protect you. You'll be in good hands with CU researchers. And remember, any research you participate in is always voluntary.

Research participation is voluntary. Most studies, such as surveys or focus group participation, will not affect your care. If the study you volunteer for may impact your care, we will work with you and your care providers closely before and during the study.

Some research may require the collection of your personal information, such as contact information or health status. Researchers are responsible for the protection and privacy of your information. And the same review boards that were described above oversee how your information is protected as well.
