Colorado Pediatric Medication Safety Program

Safer and Easier Medication Management for Children With Medical Complexity

What is Pediatric Polypharmacy?

Pediatric polypharmacy is commonly defined as taking five or more medications at the same time. Pediatric polypharmacy presents a major public health problem that is common among children with medical complexity.

The Risks of Pediatric Polypharmacy

Many children with medical complexity (CMC) in outpatient care take multiple medications every day. These medication regimens often include several high-risk drugs, such as anti-seizure, psychiatric, or pain medications.

CMC may face medication-related problems like:

  • Adverse Drug Effects
  • Major Drug-Drug Interactions
  • Inappropriate/Unnecessary Therapy
  • Under-treated Symptoms
  • Duplication of Therapy
