Community Research

Community Research

Our community research, led by Dr. Christine Walsh, focuses on enhancing genetic testing accessibility and employing community-based approaches. This effort is primarily conducted through the Gynecologic Cancer Genetics Program (GCGP), which aims to investigate and understand how genetics contribute to gynecologic cancer development. Initiatives within the program emphasize the importance of informed healthcare decisions, given that nationally, only about 30% of ovarian cancer patients currently undergo genetic testing.

The program has several objectives

  • Establishing a registry of patients affected by gynecologic cancer at UCHealth.
  • Evaluating germline (genetic) and somatic (tumor tissue) testing patterns to diagnose and manage gynecologic cancer.
  • Implementing primary prevention strategies to reduce disease occurrence.
  • Implementing secondary prevention measures for early detection.
  • Identifying factors that influence the likelihood of cancer development.

Target Populations & Risk Factors

  • We target high-risk populations by identifying genetic risk factors such as ancestry and family history of cancer.
  • Ashkenazi Jewish individuals and those with Spanish ancestry with roots in the San Luis Valley have an increased risk of carrying BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations due to the founder effect.

Benefits of the Program

  • Increase access to education and opportunities for genetic testing.
  • Inform the community about additional screenings and risk-reducing surgeries for at-risk carriers.
  • Decrease cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality rates.
  • Broaden our services to include cascade genetic testing options.

We are currently offering a genetic testing opportunity for individuals in Colorado and New Mexico with Jewish ancestry and Spanish Ancestry with roots in the San Luis Valley.
