Promotion Process

“The procedures for appointment and promotion to Associate Professor and Professor in all three tracks, as well as the award of tenure, are fully outlined in the School of Medicine Rules.

The deadline for submission of dossiers for appointments and promotions to Associate Professor and Professor, as well as the award of tenure, are due in the Office for Faculty Affairs by October 31st. Note that deadlines for submission of dossiers to your Department will be much earlier. For detailed information on preparation of dossiers, please see the Dossier Preparation page.

For faculty with an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Tenured and Tenure-Eligible track, review for promotion to Associate Professor (any track) may occur whenever the faculty member meets the specified criteria, but usually the review will occur by the beginning of the seventh year of service as an Assistant Professor. Faculty members who are not promoted to Associate Professor during their seventh year at the rank of Assistant Professor will be given one year’s notice of non-renewal. (new paragraph) Faculty members with an appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice (or Assistant Research Professor) may begin their review for promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Practice (or Associate Research Professor) whenever they have met the specified criteria, so long as it is after the completion of the Comprehensive Early Career Review.

All Assistant Professors, regardless of track, must undergo a Comprehensive Early Career Review, which should be done in the third or fourth year of the Assistant Professor appointment. The review is detailed and comprehensive and resembles a "mock" promotion review. A departmental committee evaluates faculty member's performance in the relevant domains of: teaching, research/scholarship, clinical activity, and service.

Promotion Criteria

There are three different series available for full-time (>50% FTE) faculty (including faculty employed at affiliated hospitals when their FTE between both institutions >50%). Click on the titles below to see the promotion criteria specific to that series.

It is not exclusionary, but is intended to assist faculty, department chairs and promotion committees in matching candidates’ accomplishments to the promotion criteria.
