For faculty with an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Tenured and Tenure-Eligible track, review for promotion to Associate Professor (any track) may occur whenever the faculty member meets the specified criteria, but usually the review will occur by the beginning of the seventh year of service as an Assistant Professor. Faculty members who are not promoted to Associate Professor during their seventh year at the rank of Assistant Professor will be given one year’s notice of non-renewal. 

Faculty members with an appointment as Assistant Professor of Clinical Practice (or Assistant Research Professor) may begin their review for promotion to Associate Professor of Clinical Practice (or Associate Research Professor) whenever they have met the specified criteria, so long as it is after the completion of the Comprehensive Early Career Review.

Departments should submit a completed Request for Probationary Period Extension form to the Office for Faculty Affairs.

All Assistant Professors, regardless of track, must undergo a Comprehensive Early Career Review, which should be done in the third or fourth year of the Assistant Professor appointment.  The review is detailed and comprehensive and resembles a "mock" promotion review. A departmental committee evaluates faculty member's performance in the relevant domains of: teaching, research/scholarship, clinical activity, and service.
