Medical Education and Innovation

Medical Education 2

The CU-Med-Peds program emphasizes education and innovation. Residents have the opportunity to take part in innovative educational experiences and curriculum development.

Some of our medical education initiatives have included a medical humanities curriculum incorporated into our Academic Half Days and our longitudinal REACH curriculum.

There are many resources and electives available for residents interested in medical education. The Academy of Medical Educators is a great resource for residents who seek mentorship in medical education. Through the Academy, residents can participate in the Residents and Fellows as Educators Elective. The Pediatric residency program also offers an elective, called TEACH where residents act as an additional member of inpatient teams with the main responsibility of teaching and providing feedback to medical students and interns.

In addition to the month-long electives described above, there are two longitudinal medical education opportunities within the categorical programs. Through Internal Medicine, residents can participate in the Medical Educators Pathway learning from top educators on campus during Wednesday Education Sessions. Through Pediatrics, residents have the opportunity to earn a certificate in medical education through the Medical Education Pathway.

CU Med/Peds residency

Residents develop their skills throughout their training from very early on with defined teaching opportunities within the Med-Peds Academic Half Day. This allows for experience in teaching as well as real-time feedback from peers and faculty. These opportunities include:

  ●   R2: Classroom Teaching 101- Choose a topic, develop learning objectives and get peer feedback

  ●   R3: Clinical Question Case Conference - Meet with a mentor to critically appraise an article to answer a clinical question

  ●   R4: Morbidity and Mortality Conference- focus on root cause analysis and teach peers how to recognize different biases that influence our practice
