CAN-DO is a partnership between Children’s Hospital Colorado and CU Anschutz
Studies have shown that children born with a type of congenital heart disease (CHD) called ductal dependent pulmonary blood flow can have challenges with meeting developmental milestones long after their initial heart procedure (such as a shunt or a stent). The mission of the CAN-DO Study is to understand why that can happen, and to help guide future studies in how to help prevent or treat these risks for developmental delays.
The findings of the CAN-DO Study may help future families with children born with this type of CHD who undergo a shunt or a stent procedure as newborns. The results may help researchers and inspire future studies about how to treat developmental delays, and how to study developmental outcomes in other types of CHD. Finally, the results may help guide cardiology care teams in how to provide the best developmental care for children born with this type of CHD.
CAN-DO is enrolling children born with a type of CHD called ductal dependent pulmonary blood flow who undergo either a shunt surgery or a stent procedure (via catheterization) within the first 30 days of life. There are some additional, less common medical complexities that could affect study eligibility. Please reach out to the study team for details.
Children who are eligible can enroll in CAN-DO anytime from birth through 18 months of age.
Please see the Get Involved page for more detailed information about study participation.
