APP Neurology Fellowship

The APP Neurology Fellowship Program in the Department of Neurology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine will provide 12 months of training to qualified graduates of an advanced practice program (i.e., Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), or Physician Assistant (PA). A graduate of the APP Neurology Fellowship is expected to be able to conduct a neurology history and examination, determine the appropriate diagnostic evaluation, and formulate a management plan for patients with neurologic conditions within their scope of practice. We encourage graduates to apply for positions within our department upon completion of their training.  

The fellows will have an opportunity to rotate through various subspecialties, which can include:

  1. Behavioral Neurology 
  2. Epilepsy
  3. Epilepsy Monitoring Unit
  4. General Neurology 
  5. Headache 
  6. Inpatient Consults 
  7. Movement Disorders 
  8. Multiple Sclerosis
  9. Neuro-Infectious Disease
  10. Neuromuscular Disorders 
  11. Neuro-Oncology
  12. Neuro-Ophthalmology
  13. Neuroradiology 
  14. Stroke



i. Overview

Didactic sessions will provide structured learning of topics pertinent to Neurology. These sessions will occur throughout the 12-month fellowship.  APP Neurology Fellows are expected to attend all didactic sessions. Any anticipated absences should be discussed with the APP Fellowship Directors.

ii. Details

The fellow will be required to attend the following conferences and didactic sessions (with the exception of #6 – UCHealth APP Grand Rounds):

  1. Weekly Neurology Grand Rounds – Wednesday at noon (Category I CME offered).
  2. Weekly Neurology Case Conference – Most Friday mornings 7:30 – 8:30. 
  3. Neurology Journal Clubs. 
  4. Neurology Trainee Didactic Sessions – Wednesday afternoons after Grand Rounds 1-5 pm (exception first Wednesday of each month, 2-5 pm).
  5. APP Faculty and APP NeurologyFellow Education Meeting- First Wednesday of the month 1-2 pm.
  6. UCHealth APP Ground Rounds- First Thursday of the month, 12-1 pm (optional, depending on availability).

Additional conferences that the fellow is expected to attend will be specific to each rotation. We will make every effort to include this on the rotation schedule.

Eligibility Criteria:​

To be eligible for the Neurology APP fellowship program, applicants must

  • Have graduated from an accredited NP or PA program.
  • Have national board certification as a NP or PA.
  • Be eligible for licensure as a NP or PA in Colorado.
  • Have a DEA number.
  • Applicant must have degree secured by date of application submission.

The program is recruiting APPs who would be willing to relocate to the Colorado area for future employment in the University of Colorado Neurology related practice. The University of Colorado offers competitive salaries. The program will accept 2 APP residents each year who begin the program in the summer or immediately after graduation. We will accept new graduates as well as experienced APPs.
