TACTIC- Thriving After Cancer Treatment Is Complete

A collaboration of the University of Colorado Hospital and The Children's Hospital

The TACTIC clinic, hosted by the Internal Medicine Clinic at the University of Colorado, is a transition clinic for adult survivors of childhood cancer. The clinic, which opened July of 2008, gives patients the opportunity to be evaluated by an Internist, Pediatric Oncologist, and Cancer Center Psychologist to provide a comprehensive evaluation with emphasis on survivor recommendations. Some facts:

*In 1970 the 5 year survival for childhood cancer was less than 25%, today it is 80% and increasing

*1 in 10 cancer survivors in the US is less than 40 years of age

*270,000 survivors of childhood cancer are living in the US

*1 in 640 young adults between the ages of 20-39 is a cancer survivor

*3/4 of childhood cancer survivors develop at least one chronic health condition

*including heart disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, obesity, memory impairment, depression, anxiety, secondary cancers and infertility

*Secondary cancers make up 15% of the 1.4 million cancers diagnosed annually

*Less than 25% of childhood cancer survivors are receiving follow up care by cancer centers versed in childhood cancer

*The time is now for improved survivorship access and care with a focus on the integration of the pediatric and adult medical systems for a smooth transition of care
