Lung Infections

Mycobacterium Tuberculosis

Scanning electron micrograph of Mycobacterium tuberculosis

There are a number of different types of infections that occur in the lungs, including:

  • Tuberculosis (TB)
  • Multi-drug-resistant Tuberculosis (MDR-TB)
  • Non-tuberculous Mycobacterial Infections (NTM)
  • Fungal Lung Infections
  • Bacterial Lung Infections

The first line of treatment for most lung infections is drug therapy. When the infecting agent has built up resistance to drugs and/or has caused extensive damage to a particular part of a lung, surgical intervention may provide the best outcome.

The University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus is home to the Center for the Surgical Treatment of Lung Infection—the only center of its kind in the United States. Thoracic surgeons at the University of Colorado have performed more than 750 infectious lung surgeries.
