Adult Congenital Heart Disease

​As babies who are born with a heart defect grow up into adolescents and adults, they have what is known as "adult congenital heart disease".  This disease is caused by a malformation during development of the heart while a baby is still in the womb.  This is different than acquired health conditions, like high cholesterol, which occur later in life.

Adults with congenital heart defects may have unique issues (such as a history of heart surgery or other medical issues that occur in adulthood) that require visits with specially trained cardiologists. 

Children's Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado School of Medicine and University of Colorado Hospital have teamed up to create the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program that brings together renowned experts from both hospitals.  This multidisciplinary, collaborative program enables us to provide the best possible care for adolescent and adult patients with congenital heart disease.

As part of the program, heart doctors and surgeons work together at both hospitals and utilize resources from both facilities to provide optimal care that neither institution could provide alone.  Outpatient visits, surgeries and procedures take place at Children's Hospital Colorado and University of Colorado Hospital based on the needs of each patient.  We also help ensure a smooth transition from a pediatric to an adult hospital setting when the time is right for our adult patients.
