Fun quirky fact about Vivian: She likes to collect pieces of plants from the floor of Home Depot and try to propagate them at home.
Why is diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism important to you?
As a first generation Chinese-American female, I have experienced being the minority in various settings throughout my life. In these settings, I've experienced both blatant hatred as well as incredible kindness from people in positions of power. I never want anyone to feel hatred from others as I have felt. As a physician, I know I am in a position of privilege and power and I can do the smallest things and have a big influence. It is so easy to be kind, so why would I not be involved in DEIA work?
This past year I've served as co-chair for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion workgroup for the Colorado Academy of Family Physicians (CAFP). In this capacity, I've also worked to develop a part of the CAFP's Health Equity Champions curriculum. As a outpatient clinician, I actively work to be more accessible to patients belonging to populations that are traditionally underrepresented in medicine. I stick my foot in my mouth more often than I'd like to admit, but as long as patients keep coming to me, I will keep trying to do my best to decrease disparities in healthcare.
