Why is diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism (DEIA) important to you?
I think a lot about work as a social determinant of health and contributor to health equity. I’m interested in the effects of work roles and the work environment on primary care staff members’ wellbeing. I focus on staff, specifically medical assistants (MAs), as a matter of equity: MAs, the vast majority of which are women, are lower paid and have less autonomy, flexibility and power compared to other primary care roles. Their work may contribute to avoidable health disparities in areas such as stress, burnout, and behavioral health risk factors. Primary care practices depend on MAs’ involvement to deliver quality healthcare to patients. By focusing on how their work conditions can better promote positive outcomes like satisfaction and retention, it may be possible to reduce unfair differences in wellbeing across job roles, income, and gender.
What is a quirky fun fact about yourself?
