DEIA work is important in both rural and urban underserved areas, and recruitment of rural college students into medical school is a vital pipeline for future rural physicians. As CU Rural Program faculty, I have been reaching out to small Colorado universities to recruit rural students into rural medicine. In talking to pre-med advisors at these small universities, they perceived many barriers to rural students getting into medical school.
Most of them are first generation medical workers in their families, so they often have trouble learning what is needed for a quality application. In reaching out to pre-med clubs, I am able to help these rural applicants in their medical school admissions process.
What is a quirky fun fact about yourself? I take wool from sheep and spin it into yarn to knit into sweaters.
