Managing diabetes can be overwhelming, especially when there are barriers to care or someone does not have support.
In ¡Salud, Salud! we connect Hispanic Veterans with a trusted Veteran health navigator who can help Veterans living with diabetes connect to resources.
We also encourage every Veteran to engage a trusted care partner so they are not trying to manage diabetes alone. We provide easy-to-use resources and expand your circle of support so that you can take control of diabetes.
¡Salud, Salud! offers a culturally responsive, whole-health approach that expands Veterans’ circle of support for managing diabetes. The program was originally developed through a partnership between the University of Texas at Austin and the YMCA of Austin to support low-income Latino families facing barriers to diabetes self-management through education and social support to address limited access to care, language barriers, and health literacy.
This 12-week bilingual (English & Spanish), family-centered program is designed to improve blood sugar levels and health-related quality of life for individuals with type 2 diabetes or prediabetes by helping participants build practical skills in monitoring blood sugar, making healthy food, being active as a family, and reducing stress.
