Stevens-Lapsley (PI). Multicomponent Telerehabilitation to Engage Veterans in Effective Self-Management of Complex Health Conditions. 4/1/2024-3/30/2028 ($1,200,000). The goal of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a multicomponent telerehabilitation program on medically complex Veterans.

Field-Fote (PI), Stevens-Lapsley (Co-PI). Training in Grantsmanship for Rehabilitation Research. NIH R25 HD074546; 2/9/2023-2/8/2028 ($166,781). This year-long research education program engages early-stage investigators in one-on-one expert mentorship in grantsmanship, grants management, career development, and development of peer-review skills for rehabilitation research.

Hillary Lum (PI), Stevens-Lapsley (Co-I). Gait Speed Screening Initiative: To Identify Older Adults with Lower Functional Status at Risk of Falls. Clinical Effectiveness and Patient Safety (CEPS) Grant Program at UCH; 8/1/2022-7/31/2023 ($21,500). This initiative will implement gait speed measurements as a 6^th vital sign at UCH Seniors Clinics to refer patients to appropriate exercise and rehabilitation interventions to prevent adverse events (falls, ER visits, hospitalizations).

The goal of this work is to implement and evaluate a high intensity resistance rehabilitation paradigm in skilled nursing facilities using a cluster randomized trial.

Stevens-Lapsley (PI). Engaging Medically Complex Veterans in Tele-Rehabilitation Using a Biobehavioral Approach: A Pilot Study of Feasibly and Acceptability. VA RR&D I21RX003730. 7/1/2021-6/30/2023 ($228,501). The goal of this study is to assess the effectiveness of a multicomponent telerehabilitation using a two-group randomized crossover design.

Christiansen C (PI), Stevens-Lapsley JE (Co-I). Optimizing Physical Activity Outcomes for Veterans after Total Knee Arthroplasty VA Merit Award RR&D I01RX002417; 11/1/2018-10/30/2023 ($1,077,824). The goal of this clinical trial is to determine the efficacy of physical activity behavior-change telerehabilitation on improving physical activity after total knee arthroplasty.

Stevens-Lapsley (PI). Novel Strategies for Personalized Clinical Decisions in Knee Arthroplasty. AHRQ R01 HS025692; 9/1/2018-6/30/2023 ($1,922,505). The goal of this study is to develop and implement a clinical decision tool for shared decision making to facilitate personalized approaches to care for patients after total knee arthroplasty.

Binder E (PI), Stevens-Lapsley JE (Co-I). Combining Testosterone and Exercise to Improve Function Post Hip Fracture. NIH R01 AG051647; 10/1/2017-9/30/2023 ($4,142,501). This clinical trial will evaluate whether adding an anabolic hormone stimulus to exercise results in improved functional outcomes after hip fracture in older women when compared with exercise alone.

Stevens-Lapsley (PI). Movement Pattern Biofeedback Training after Total Knee Arthroplasty. NIH R01 AG056585; 9/15/2017-5/30/2023 ($3,004,535). The major goal of this study is to determine if the addition of a novel movement pattern training program to contemporary progressive rehabilitation improves functional movement pattern quality more than contemporary progressive rehabilitation alone after unilateral TKA.

Stevens-Lapsley JE (PI). Progressing Home Health Rehabilitation Paradigms for Older Adults. NIH R01 NR016209; 7/1/2016-5/31/2023 ($2,946,919). The major goal of this study is to determine if an interdisciplinary approach to home health rehabilitation including nutritional supplementation, improves physical function and reduces re-hospitalizations more than usual care.

Dr. Stevens-Lapsley’s investigations use a multifaceted approach to evaluate intervention strategies designed to enhance the effectiveness of rehabilitation in older adult patient populations with an emphasis on joint arthroplasty and medically complex populations.
