Dr. Villarreal has interests in trauma focused care and suicide prevention. He was a Trauma Postdoctoral Fellow at Joint Base San Antonio- Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) for the Warrior Resiliency Program. He began his VA career at the Central Texas Veteran Health Care System where he served as the Program Manager for outpatient mental health programs. Most recently, he served as the Deputy Chief of Staff for Mental Health at the VA Eastern Colorado Health Care System (ECHCS). He also served as the Suicide Prevention Program Manager at VA ECHCS and served on special assignment with the OMHSP- Suicide Prevention Program as the Clinical Director for Suicide Prevention and worked to support the Community Based Interventions for Suicide Prevention (CBI-SP) initiative. He currently serves as the Director for Education & Training at the Rocky Mountain Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) for Suicide Prevention. In addition to his service to VA, he is also the Chair-Elect for the American Psychological Association(APA) Division 18-Psychologist in Public Service- VA Section.
