Evaluating a longitudinal point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) curriculum for pediatric residents

The gap addressed by this publication by University of Colorado Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians Julia Brant, Jonathan Orsborn, Emily Greenwald, and Megan Mickley is that pediatric residencies have been slow to adapt point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into their curriculums, despite the benefits to the pediatric population including no pain, portability to the bedside, lack of ionizing radiation, and the potential for earlier diagnosis. Previous studies have shown lack of education and trained faculty as barriers to increased POCUS use in pediatrics. 

A team of Denver Health and University of Colorado Pediatric Emergency Medicine physician-scientists created a longitudinal POCUS curriculum for pediatric residents after a needs assessment showed significant interest.  This paper describes the curriculum in detail as well as a qualitative evaluation of the program. The authors' goal is that other pediatric programs will begin to incorporate POCUS into their curriculums.
