Department of Pediatrics has produced a 216-page coffee table book on the history of this prestigious department, beginning with its founding in 1930. The book is designed with a pictorial timeline as the centerpiece, giving readers a chronological
account of the Department’s achievements and the people who made them happen. The narrative was written in a journalistic, story-telling manner that conveys the heart of this Department’s rich legacy as well as the high points of the nearly nine decades. Together, these components create a retrospective of the Department’s
contributions over 88 years in the areas of clinical expertise, training, research, advocacy, and innovation.
Past and current faculty have been generous in sharing highlights and photos, allowing the Department to assemble a strong collection
of images, milestones, profiles, and reflections.
It is important to understand the history of an institution as it can be a cause for celebration and create the platform for future accomplishments. This was the impetus to revisit the milestones
of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in our partnership with Children’s Hospital Colorado.

Nadeau Named ELAM Fellow
Kristen Nadeau, MD, MS, (Professor, Section of Endocrinology) has been accepted as a Fellow in the 2019-2020, 25th anniversary Class of the Hedwig van Ameringen Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program for Women.
ELAM is dedicated to developing the professional and personal skills required to lead and manage in today's complex health care environment, with special attention to the unique challenges facing women in leadership positions. More than 1,000 ELAM alumnae hold leadership positions in institutions around the world. Selection to the ELAM fellows program is exceptionally competitive with applicants requiring nomination from the Dean or CEO of their academic health center. During their fellowship, program participants develop an Institutional Action Project that expands leadership skills and institutional visibility.

Foreman Awarded Childhood Brain Cancer Research Funding
Nicholas Foreman, MD (Professor, Section of Hematology/Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplantation) has been awarded a 5-year, $1.8 million research project award (R01-CA237608) from the National Cancer Institute for a project titled, “Investigation of a Novel Cancer Stem Cell Population in Ependymoma.”
Brain tumors have become the leading cause of cancer-related death in children. Ependymoma occurs most often in young children, accounting for about 9 percent of all childhood brain cancers. Childhood ependymoma is an aggressive malignant brain tumor with a very high, and often late, recurrence rate.
Dr. Foreman and his research team have identified tumor cells in ependymoma that appear to be “stem cells” that can re-grow tumor even after previous apparent complete removal at surgery. Confirmation, and further analysis, of these stem cells is anticipated to provide novel targets to reduce the high recurrence rate in ependymoma.
Screening Program Targets Celiac Disease
Undiagnosed and untreated celiac disease impairs nutrition and has lifelong impacts leading to poor bone accrual and fracture, infertility, gastrointestinal lymphoma, poor growth, anxiety, depression and increased mortality.
A new project lead by Marisa Gallant, MD (Fellow, Section of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition) and her research mentor, Edwin Liu, MD (Professor and Director, Colorado Center for Celiac Disease), seeks to evaluate the impact of celiac disease on health and quality of life at diagnosis, and after one year of treatment in children identified through a novel mass-screening program.
Funding for the project was awarded to Dr. Gallant by the Society for the Study of Celiac Disease and its Beyond Celiac Early Career Research Award. The two-year project will be a part of the largest prospective study of mass screening for celiac disease in U.S. children. By evaluating the physiological and psychosocial impact of identifying celiac disease by screening and subsequent treatment, the study will inform researchers on the potential benefits and harms of future mass-screening programs that may be taken to the national level.
Focus On Advocacy
Advocacy, together with high-quality patient care, education, and research, is a key component of the Department of Pediatrics mission.
Recently, the Central Colorado Area Health Education Center (AHEC) monthly newsletter featured a spotlight on Jennifer Armstrong, MD, MPH (Associate Professor, Section of Child Neurology) in her advocacy role as incoming Board President for the Central Colorado AHEC.
Dr. Armstrong has been a member of CCAHEC board for two years, and has been a passionate advocate for the efforts of the Colorado AHEC system to improve the quality and accessibility of education for health care professionals in Colorado.
Junior Faculty Interest Group Update
JFIG will host a Wellness Event on May 16 from noon - 1:30 p.m. in Mt. Oxford in the Children’s Hospital Colorado 2nd Floor Conference Center.
The event will include wellness information, tips, and breakout groups for Mindfulness and Art Therapy. Lunch will be provided.

Pediatric Research Poster Session
The 2019 Spring Pediatric Research Poster Session will be held on Friday, May 17, from noon – 2 p.m. in the Children’s Hospital Colorado 2nd Floor Conference Center.
This will be an informal poster display highlighting recent and ongoing clinical, translational and basic research activities. Fellows, faculty, residents, nurses, and all Children’s Hospital Colorado professional staff are encouraged to attend and participate.
The Pediatric Committee on Fellowship Education will be awarding most outstanding posters in the categories of first-, second- and third-year fellow.
