Fellowship

Fellowship Mission of the University of Colorado

The goal of our fellowship program is to train an independently-practicing pediatric otolaryngologist who is knowledgeable, capable, competent, self-critical, inquisitive, ethical, and compassionate. This one-year postgraduate education program provides an in-depth survey of the subspecialty based on clinical, didactic, and research exposure. The program will allow the trainee to expertly diagnose, treat, and manage patients with pediatric otolaryngology disorders, ranging from routine to complex, and provide opportunities for increased decision making, clinical duties, and autonomy as the academic year progresses.

Education and Philosophy

The education of the pediatric otolaryngology fellows encompasses the scope of learning objectives proposed by the Fellowship Committee of the American Society of Pediatric Otolaryngology. This includes the management of pediatric problems, such as congenital anomalies of the head and neck, hearing impairment, genetic and developmental anomalies, swallowing disorders, sinus disease, airway disorders and head and neck tumors is multifaceted.

The philosophy of training in the fellowship program comes in the form of both being the recipient from the attendings and in the form of the provider for the otolaryngology fellows. The pediatric otolaryngology fellow gains initial experience early in their residency by observing the attendings in the out-patient department and assisting the attendings in the operating room. Later in the year the trainee gains expertise in the field of pediatric otolaryngology by acting as the primary or teaching surgeon in more complex surgical cases.

The program ensures that the faculty members have sufficient time to supervise and teach fellows by scheduling times which are free of clinical responsibilities. The attendings incorporate teaching into their normal clinical schedules, which include O.R. and clinic time, as well as daily afternoon teaching rounds with one of the attending.
