We are excited to announce the 5th Annual CU Orthopedic Research Symposium and D’Ambrosia Diversity Lectureship, scheduled for Wednesday, October 25th, 2023. This event will include plenary lectures, pre-and post-doctoral trainee presentations, and two poster sessions. Pre-and post-doctoral trainee awards recognizing the best research will be presented. Since its inception in 2019, each of our symposia has welcomed >200 attendees, hosted up to 100 posters, and has been sponsored by several local and national industry partners in combination with the Mack Clayton Endowment. Top science has been showcased by the University of Colorado Department of Orthopedics, numerous other is clinical and basic science departments in the CU system, and Universities across the front range including Colorado State University, Colorado School of Mines, University of Denver, Steadman Philippon Research Institute, University of Northern Colorado, University of South Dakota, and the University of New Mexico.

We are thrilled to announce that Dr. MaCalus Hogan will anchor the event as the D’Ambrosia Diversity Keynote Lecturer. MaCalus V. Hogan, MD, MBA, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is the David Silver Professor and Chair of the UPMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. Additionally, he serves as chief of foot and ankle surgery, vice chair of education and residency program director in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at UPMC, and professor in the Departments of Orthopaedic Surgery and Bioengineering. He is the director of the Foot and Ankle Injury Research (FAIR) group and co-director of the Musculoskeletal Growth and Regeneration Lab within the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. 

Dr. Hogan completed his undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana with a B.S. in biochemistry and a minor in biology. He received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington, D.C., and completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville, Virginia, which included a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinician Scientist fellowship year with a focus in musculoskeletal tissue repair and regeneration. He completed his foot and ankle fellowship at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, where he served as a consultant for the New York Ballet Company, American Ballet Theatre, and several collegiate and professional sports teams. Following the completion of his training in 2013, Dr. Hogan joined UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He earned an Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) in health care at the University of Pittsburgh – Katz School of Business in 2018.

He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Orthopaedic Association, the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society, and Orthopaedic Research Society. He has over 150 manuscripts, book chapters, and presentations. Dr. Hogan presents both nationally and internationally on his management of foot and ankle injuries, regenerative medicine, clinical outcomes research, and health care delivery transformation. In addition to his clinical and research practice, Dr. Hogan serves as a foot and ankle consultant for the athletic departments at the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, and Robert Morris University. He also serves as the assistant team physician for Point Park University, including the Conservatory of Performing Arts, and the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

Dr. Hogan currently serves on the board of directors for the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society and has been selected as a “Best Doctor” by Best Doctors in America® and Pittsburgh Magazine annually since 2016. His physician executive and community efforts resulted in his selection to DiversityMBA's Top 100 Under 50 Executive Leaders in 2018. Most notably, he was selected as one of Modern Healthcare’s Top 15 Up and Comers as an emerging national leader in health care in 2018.

Dr. Tamara Alliston, has been selected as our Scientific Keynote Lecturer. Tamara Alliston, Ph.D., is a Professor in the UCSF Department of Orthopaedic Surgery where she directs the UCSF Musculoskeletal Center.  With a focus on TGFβ signaling, her laboratory investigates the interaction between physical and biochemical signals in the control of skeletal cell differentiation and the role of these pathways in skeletal development and disease. Supported by the NIH, NSF, and DOD, her group employs approaches from molecular and cell biology, materials science, and engineering to identify mechanisms of skeletal disease in order to advance the development of new therapeutic strategies. 

She is the Director of the NIH-P30-supported UCSF Core Center for Musculoskeletal Biology and Medicine and is an Editorial Board member for the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research and Bone. She recently served as a standing member of the NIH Skeletal Biology Structure and Regeneration (SBSR) study section and as the Translational Co-Chair for the 2020 ASBMR Annual Meeting Program meeting. Through her service on the Orthopaedic Research Society (ORS) Board of Directors as the inaugural Professional Development Council Chair, she led programming for new investigators, industry-based researchers, women, and individuals underrepresented in science. She has mentored over 25 graduate and post-graduate scholars, many of whom now hold faculty and leadership roles in academia and industry.  She has successfully organized a number of research conferences, such as the AAOS/ORS Workshop on Joint Crosstalk and the 2022 Gordon Research Conference on Musculoskeletal Biology and Bioengineering. She is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE). Dr. Alliston's honors include a Hulda Irene Duggan Arthritis Investigator Award, the ASBMR Harold M. Frost Young Investigator Award, the AIMM-ASBMR John Haddad Young Investigator Award, the ORS Women’s Leadership Award, and the ASBMR Adele Boskey Esteemed Award.

Registration and abstract submissions open on June 1. The abstract submission deadline is Aug 11th.
