Adult Reconstruction

Since 1979, CU Orthopedics Adult Reconstruction section has specialized in joint preservation and replacement for hips and knees.  We perform more than 1,500 joint replacements annually, and our combined experience totals more than 100 years.  We are a regional referral center for primary and complex joint replacement procedures.  Our team is comprised of researchers and leaders, promoting the advancement of joint replacement care locally and nationally.

By using cutting-edge technology including surgical navigation and computer-assisted surgery, we offer minimally invasive surgery to get you back to your life as quickly as possible. For example, we specialize in the anterior approach to hip replacement. This procedure spares muscle and tissue, allowing for faster recovery, improved mobility, and less pain.

We offer integrated joint reconstructive services with UCHealth, where all physician care, testing, and therapy is provided in the same locations by a core group of people. We also provide specialized care for patients with complex medical conditions such as hemophilia and bloodless surgery for patients who are Jehovah's Witness.

The Adult Reconstruction team provides advanced care of hip and knee pain caused by damage or degeneration of the joint surfaces.  While arthritis is the most common condition we treat, our surgeons also specialize in treatment of joints that have been damaged by trauma, infections, congenital abnormalities, and avascular necrosis.  We offer both operative and non-operative treatment options for patients with these conditions, and we perform a broad range of surgeries including:

  • Total hip replacement including Anterior Approach
  • Total knee replacement
  • Partial (unicompartmental) knee replacement
  • Complex and revision hip replacement
  • Complex and revision knee replacement
  • Hip fracture surgery
  • Prosthetic joint infection care
  • Hip resurfacing
  • Painful joint replacements
  • Soft tissue reconstruction after knee replacements (extensor mechanism)

Craig Hogan, MD

Chief, Adult Reconstruction

I treat the full spectrum of hip and knee disorders with focus on arthritic conditions. This includes osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, post-traumatic arthritis, inflammatory arthritis and painful previous joint replacements. I am a fellowship trained adult reconstruction specialist with extensive knowledge in the above subjects. I am currently a faculty member at the University of Colorado hospital and am actively participating in research and new physician education to help advance the field of Orthopedics and Joint Replacement.

I work with my patients on an individual basis to develop a care plan that suits their needs and desires. I firmly believe in treating the patient as a whole to enable them the best chance for recovering function and improving their quality of life.

I am a native of Colorado and enjoy being outdoors skiing, hiking, and camping to name a few. I also enjoy spending my free time with my wife and children in this beautiful state.

Osteoarthritis, What You Should Know

What is the cause of osteoarthritis?

  • The cause of osteoarthritis is unclear, but several factors often contribute to its development including obesity, genetics, trauma/ injury, instability, and age:
  • The global rise in obesity correlates with a significant rise in the frequency of arthritis, particularly in the knee joint.
  • Genetics clearly plays a role and has been correlated with osteoarthritis especially in the joints of the hand and wrist.
  • Trauma and injury can result in damage to the cartilage, and poor alignment of the bones can contribute to the development of osteoarthritis.
  • Instability of the joints related to poor ligaments or weakness can also lead to cartilage loss and ultimately osteoarthritis.
  • Age has been associated with osteoarthritis. Although the frequency of OA increases with age, it does not occur in all individuals and should not be considered inevitable.

    Double-Double-Hip-Replacement, Dr. Koonce-and-Linharts

Double hip replacement for couple married 47 years

Jerry and Sharon Linhart have shared a lot during 47 years of marriage. They didn’t expect double hip replacements to be part of the bargain, but with good care and mutual support, they’re moving on, thanks to Dr. Ryan Koonce, an adult reconstructive orthopedic surgeon at UCHealth Highlands Ranch Hospital who specializes in knee and hip replacements.

With hip revision surgery, second time’s a charm

Blake Learned rides his mountain bike near Moab, Utah, in 2019. The prosthetic hip that enabled such adventures would, after a nasty fall and subsequent infection, need replacing. Photo courtesy of Blake Learned

    Tess McDowell, Knee Replacement

Knee replacement has ‘with-it grandma’ back to her normal active life

While arthritis pain was a serious factor in her decision to undergo knee-replacement surgery, a prime motivator for Tess McDowell, second from right, was restoring her ability to be active with her family. With her from left are granddaughter Tess, daughter Michaela, son-in-law Mike, and grandsons Michael and Donnie Landwehr; and husband Don of 52 years. (Photo courtesy of Tess McDowell)

For knee and hip replacements, a day makes all the difference

Randy Joseph was up and walking within a few hours, driving in four days, and hiking at Horsetooth Reservoir in Fort Collins, Colorado after his hip-replacement surgery at UCHealth University of Colorado Hospital. Photo by Joel Blocker, for UCHealth.
