Christopher Caruso, MD, MPH
Chris grew up in Keene, New Hampshire, and attended Tufts
University School of Medicine before moving to Colorado to complete his
internal medicine training at CU in the Categorical Track. He is working on research in the health disparities of lung cancer and lung cancer screening. He
plans to pursue a fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical care after his Chief
year. Chris couples matched to Colorado with his wife, Swetha, who recently
completed her residency in Family Medicine here at CU as well. Together, they
have a 9-year-old black lab Tonka. Outside the hospital you’ll find Chris
skiing, golfing, fly fishing, and enjoying local restaurants.
Cassandra Duarte, MD
Cassandra grew up in Rhode Island, attending Wellesley College for her undergraduate education. She then worked for the US Department of Health and Human Services before returning to Rhode Island to attend medical school at Brown University. Even though there are no oceans nearby, Cassandra still chose to come to the University of Colorado for residency. During residency she has participated in research on treatment outcomes for patients with kidney cancer. After chief year Cassandra plans to go into academic hematology/oncology. When she isn't daydreaming about the ocean or Rhode Island calamari she can be found trying out all of Denver's fitness studios, hiking, taking care of her many houseplants, or participating in a book club.
Kathryn grew up mostly in Bozeman, Montana, and attended the University of Colorado Medical School in the Rural Track. She completed her residency at the University of Colorado in the Primary Care Track and in the Health Equity Pathway. Through residency, she focused on developing her passion for medical education, rural medicine, and health care policy advocacy. After chief year, Kathryn plans to become a rural hospitalist and plans to develop more residency training experiences in rural towns by combining her passions of medical education and advocating for improved residency funding in underserved rural areas. Outside the hospital you can find Kathryn mountain biking, ski touring, running, or traveling with her husband Beau and daughter Jade.
Jason was born in Boston and split his childhood between North Andover, Massachusetts, and Fort Worth, Texas. After attending Texas A&M University and the UT Health San Antonio Long School of Medicine, he moved to Denver to complete his internal medicine residency training at the University of Colorado within the Hospitalist Training Program. Jason is extroverted, animated, and passionate about medical education and clinical mentorship. Accordingly, he has aspirations of a career in academic hospital medicine. Outside of medicine, Jason most enjoys spending time with his friends, especially when that involves hiking, great food, breweries, live music, cheering on his favorite sports teams, and watching extraordinary television shows.
Sam grew up in Leawood, Kansas. After earning an undergraduate
degree in Spanish from Purdue University, she attended medical school at the
University of Kansas. She completed her Internal Medicine residency training at
the University of Colorado in the categorical track and Clinician Educator
pathway. She couples matched with her husband Marc, who is a chief resident in
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Early in residency, Sam fell in love with the ICU. Her
academic interests include resuscitation of patients with sepsis, as well as
medical Spanish education and proficiency testing. She is excited to pursue
fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care. Outside of the hospital, Sam enjoys skiing in the Outback at
Keystone, finding great day hikes near Denver, searching for the best local
breweries, and learning to grow vegetables at altitude.
Manny was born in Pinar Del Rio, Cuba grew up in Miami, Florida, and attended medical school at Creighton University. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the University of Colorado within the Categorical Track and Clinical Educator Pathway. During residency, he developed a passionate interest in medical education and performed cardiovascular clinical outcomes research. He will be pursuing a Nephrology fellowship in the next year. Outside of the hospital Manny enjoys weightlifting, cycling, and above all spending time with his wife Claire, newborn daughter Esme, and tiny pup Missy.
Michelle is a mythical Colorado native. She went to the University of Colorado for undergrad before taking time off to travel the world (she worked in a health clinic in rural India, as a maid in Italy and Scotland, and as a book researcher in Spain) and then return to the US to manage a home healthcare company before going to medical school at the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. She plans to work as an academic hospitalist with a focus on systems improvement and patient safety after her chief year. In her spare time, Michelle enjoys reading, traveling, drinking wine on patios, and avoiding all snow-based activities.
