The Gates Grubstake Fund invokes the memory of Gold Rush prospectors who received seed money, “grubstakes,” for food and supplies so they could search for treasure. The funding supports the work of modern-day prospectors – translational researchers affiliated with Gates Institute – whose work developing cell- and gene-based therapies could make a difference in human lives. In 2022, four awardees received $350,000 each to support their work.

The state-of-the-art Gates Biomanufacturing Facility opened in 2015 to help on- and off-campus investigators translate innovative research discoveries into safe and effective cell therapy and protein products for use in clinical trials. We now have the manufacturing capability and campus infrastructure with which to benefit patients with no other viable therapeutic options!
Although Gates Institute's mission is to support brilliant researchers and clinicians in order to accelerate their discoveries from the lab through clinical trials to therapies and cures, the Institute does not provide direct patient care or conduct clinical trials.
The Gates community gathered in January for a Western-themed evening of fun and camaraderie. We reflected on our legacy of accelerating discoveries from the lab through clinical trials to therapies and cures, and we toasted the new year and the launch of Gates Institute.
