ATLAS – Airway, Trauma, Lung injury, and Sepsis Research

We focus on epidemiological and clinical trials in the acute care setting, with a particular focus on early care of critically ill and injured patients. Our recent work incudes sepsis, respiratory failure, oxygenation strategies, and COVID-19.  Our recent collaborations include the PETAL, SIREN, and IVY research networks. Our active projects are funded by NIH, DoD, and CDC.

PETAL Network

Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung Injury Network, funded by NHLBI. The goal of this application is to participate in the selection and conduct of clinical trials for the prevention and early treatment of acute lung injury across a network of 12 clinical centers. Our clinical center includes two academic and four community hospitals in the greater Denver area and a robust infrastructure for recruitment of critically ill emergency department and intensive care unit patients into clinical trials.

  • CORAL – COVID-19 Observational Study
  • ORCHID – Outcomes Related to COVID-19 Treated with Hydroxychloroquine among In-Patients with Symptomatic Disease
  • VIOLET BUD - Vitamin D to improve outcomes by Leveraging early treatment Long-term brain outcomes in vitamin D Deficient Patients

  • SAVE-O2 Trauma - Strategy to Avoid Excessive Oxygenation in Critically Injured Trauma Patients
  • SAVE-O2 Burn - Strategy to Avoid Excessive Oxygenation in Major Burn Patients

SIREN Network

  • BOOST-3 (Primary Study Coordinator) - Brain Oxygen Optimization in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury – Phase 3 (BOOST-3). The goal of this study to determine if there is evidence of clinical efficacy of a treatment protocol based on brain tissue oxygenation (PbtO2) monitoring compared to treatment based on intracranial pressure (ICP) monitoring alone.
