Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Our Commitments

In the Department of Emergency Medicine, we believe that diversity will power change. Our vision is to change the world with emergency care excellence. To do this, we will enhance and foster a learning community and a mentoring culture that is committed to diversity and inclusive excellence.

We need to engage everyone to transform health care and improve human health: to collaborate, discover, and innovate; to accelerate and lead; and to improve and transform care, health, and well-being. Our learning community empowers diverse, multidisciplinary individuals and teams to work together towards these goals. Diverse perspectives, experiences, and expertise are both a value and a mission.  We are committed to an equitable and inclusive environment where everyone has cultural safety to be authentic, belong, and thrive.

At the Department of Emergency Medicine, we believe that:

  • Diversity strengthens our department by transforming care so we can transform the lives of our patients and in communities.
  • Through teaching and learning, we change the world for current and future patients, health care providers, and scientists.
  • By infusing teams with diverse perspectives and expertise, we collectively tackle the greatest challenges of our time with our greatest resources—our people and community.

We welcome you to join us as we discover, develop and disseminate from the Front Line!

Our Story

The University of Colorado School of Medicine is located at the Anschutz Medical Campus in Aurora Colorado, just east of downtown Denver.  CU Anschutz is the largest academic health center in the Rocky Mountain Region, including a major medical hub for the University of Colorado Hospital and UCHealth system; Colorado Children’s Hospital; and the Veteran Affairs Hospital. CU Anschutz campus was developed on the former Fitzsimons Medical Army Base.

Our academic health center includes six schools and colleges—Medicine, Public Health, Nursing, Pharmacy, Dental Medicine, and Graduate Education—that rank among the Best Rated in the U.S. News and World Report. We are committed to transforming structures in education, science, and medicine in such that we ensure diversity, equity, inclusion, and health equity.

Together, the University of Colorado Denver and the CU Anschutz Medical Campus are designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI), Minority Serving Institution (MSI), and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-Serving Institution (AANAPISI). We are taking concrete steps to transform our campus and institutions into models for diversity and inclusive excellence so that we can harness all talents towards our missions.
