Membership Resources

The University of Colorado Cancer Center was established in 1988. Our 400+ members are renowned scientists and clinicians from across Colorado and the Rocky Mountain region who are interested in collaborating with others to understand the basic mechanisms of cancer, discover and create new tests, treatments and therapies, design and participate in clinical trials and pursue solutions for preventing and controlling cancer in our community and across the world.

The University of Colorado Cancer Center (the “Center”) has been designated a consortium comprehensive cancer center by the National Cancer Institute of the National Institutes of Health. The Center receives support from the National Cancer Institute under Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG) P30CA046934. The cancer center consortium has 6 members: University of Colorado Denver, University of Colorado Boulder, Colorado State University, University of Colorado Hospital, Children’s Hospital Colorado and the Denver VA Medical Center. Our ability to maintain this designation and grant is dependent upon having center members that focus on cancer research. 

 

Application Process

Application for membership is voluntary and connotes agreement by the applicant with the Center's mission, objectives and requirements. Please read the Cancer Center Objectives and Membership Guidelines​​​ prior to applying.

 

Application Procedures (Please complete the following):

3. The Cancer Relevance Statement (within form). The statement of cancer research interest should contain sufficient detail to allow reviewers to understand how the applicant is involved in cancer research (i.e. basic, clinical or both), what types of cancer are impacted by the applicant’s research or clinical activities, and whether the research has translational potential. In addition, the applicant’s statement should provide the names of other cancer center members with whom (s)he collaborates or intends to establish collaborations, and identify any shared resources that (s)he intends to use in pursuit of the applicant’s cancer research program.

4. Current copy of the applicant’s NIH Biosketch.   

Applications are reviewed by the Co-Leaders of the research program selected by the candidate. The Program Co-Leaders are required to specify, as part of their review, how the candidate will contribute to and strengthen the program. The Program Co-Leaders also recommend the membership level. Program Co-Leaders may elect to contact an applicant directly to obtain any necessary clarifications and/or to discuss in-depth the applicant’s interests and area(s) of cancer-relevant activities.

 

A recommendation for approval of membership by the Program Leaders will be brought before the Governance Committee who will make the final decision.  Meetings are held monthly.

 

Faculty Recruitment

The CU Cancer Center provides research funding for the recruitment and retention of faculty whose presence enhances the strategic priorities of the Center. Requests for such support will be evaluated based upon the following policies: 

1. Funds will generally be approved for a limited period of time (maximum up to 3 years), though strongly justified exceptions may be considered.

2. Funds will be provided to support the candidate’s cancer research activities only (which must be clearly defined in the request), and may not be used for salary support. 

3. The host department must provide a level of research support to the candidate that is at least equal to the amount requested from the Cancer Center. Those departments providing research funds in excess to the amount requested from the Cancer Center will receive the most favorable consideration. 

4. Candidates whom the Cancer Center agrees to support must apply for Cancer Center membership prior to the receipt of funds. 

5. Funding is contingent upon the candidate’s fulfilling the terms under which the request was granted, i.e. the terms outlined in the funds-request template. Candidate must present a yearly progress report that will justify continued funding according to the initially approved package. 

Procedures for Requesting Funds: 

1. Requestors must submit the Cancer Center Faculty Recruitment form.

2. All requests will be initially reviewed by the Cancer Center Executive Committee and, if deemed competitive, forwarded to the Cancer Center Governance Committee for final review and approval. 

3. After final Governance Committee review, the requestor will receive an email notification from the Cancer Center Associate Director for Administration and Finance regarding final decision and any specific conditions or terms associated with the decision.
