A major goal of the lab is to study the molecular pathways within skin that are activated by exposure to ultraviolet irradiation (UVR). We are examining the molecular mechanisms that regulate the balance between skin photoprotection and tanning, and melanoma promotion after UVR. We are currently examining therapeutic strategies to augment natural skin photoprotection after UVR as a melanoma chemopreventive strategy.

Techniques routinely used in the lab include mouse husbandry and necropsies, quantitative PCR, fluorescent in vitro imaging, immunohistochemistry, immunocytochemistry, tissue culture, grafting and virus production.
