Our commitment to seeding ideas and growing the careers of researchers leads to life-changing discoveries, expand the field and speeds progress on closing the gap in women’s health research.
Our approach of providing both funding and dedicated mentoring by senior researchers has resulted in nearly all of the Center’s MD and PhD scientists continuing to research sex and gender differences following completion of their initial research projects, with many also moving on to become mentors.
Our grants help scientists test, refine and expand ideas. In many cases, it is a researcher's first time embarking on sex or gender differences' research. The data obtained enable them to secure larger funding from the National Institutes of Health and other external funding agencies. For every dollar we award to scientists, an additional $44 has been obtained by our researchers to pursue their ideas in women’s health and sex and gender research on a larger scale.
The Center's Junior Faculty Research Development Awards, or seed grants, jump-start ideas and help researchers build careers in women’s health, sex and gender differences research. Our funding, mentoring, trainings, networking, and biostatistical support make it possible for junior researchers to obtain crucial pilot data and become independent investigators, effectively positioning them to secure future funding.
The Building Interdisciplinary Research Careers in Women's Health grant provides support to physician-scientists and scientists in the early stages of their professional careers so they can achieve an independent research career. With a focus on three interrelated areas affecting women's health – pregnancy, immunology and adult health – junior faculty members are paired with senior investigators in a mentored, interdisciplinary scientific environment.
