“New Hope for Alzheimer’s” – as seen on 9News

A 30-minute Special Report

Denver’s NBC affiliate, 9News/KUSA, produced a half-hour special about Alzheimer’s disease research called “New Hope for Alzheimer’s,” which includes interviews with researchers from the Rocky Mountain Alzheimer’s Disease Center (RMADC) and footage from the Potter Lab.

The special, which can be seen in its entirety here, reports on four topics associated with RMADC, starting with the testing of an established cancer therapy, Leukine®, as an Alzheimer’s disease treatment. Dr. Huntington Potter, RMADC director, says although there are still many unanswered questions about the effectiveness of Leukine®, the early results make him “cautiously optimistic.”

In the other segments, former CU Buffs football coach Bill McCartney talks about his life with Alzheimer’s; there are lifestyle tips for brain health that have been shown to have a positive effect in staving off dementia (Exercise! Drink coffee!); and, we meet a man with Down syndrome who has Alzheimer’s disease, and learn about the special challenges he and his family face.

Three segments first aired on the late evening newscasts on Feb. 28 - Mar. 2, 2017. An additional story featured Mrs. Marcy Benson, wife of University of Colorado President Bruce Benson, who is a strong advocate for the research programs at the Rocky Mountain Alzheimer’s Disease Center, and Beth Bowlen, daughter of Denver Broncos owner Pat Bowlen, who has Alzheimer’s disease.
